George Buchanan Architects undertook a feasibility study for the extension of an existing nursery, to form a new play room and associated ancillary accommodation.
We sought to design the new playroom extension to create a positive and inspiring environment for children to play and learn.
The use of a monopitch roof allowed control of the amount and direction of natural light entering the space, whilst low level windows and coloured glass reduces the scale of the space for young children.
The material palette directly referenced the existing house, with walls finished in matching brickwork and roof finished in slate with zinc detailing. In addition, the leading wall forming the front elevation of the new extension provided the opportunity for signage, creating a welcoming entrance to the nursery, and giving the business brand identity and street presence.
