Killearn Extension
Killearn Extension

Set in the grounds of the Carbeth Estate, Killearn, the existing property consists of a series of cottages forming a traditional courtyard arrangement. The courtyard was incomplete with one corner demolished several years previously.

The proposals sought to repair the courtyard form with a simple, elegant insertion completing the corner. To the courtyard side, the extension takes on a traditional form with sandstone re-used from garden walls being removed, traditional punched windows and a reclaimed slate roof. This sits sympathetically with the adjacent existing facades and strengthens the ‘repair’ of the courtyard.

The outward facing elevations have a contemporary aesthetic with large expanses of glazing, cedar cladding and leadwork. Large, glazed sliding screens link the internal space to a new landscaped terrace and the countryside beyond.

Internally a double height space is formed housing a large living space and feature stair to the existing first floor studio space. Underfloor heating provides the principal heat source to the extension.

The project completed Spring 2014.
